Garden Windows in Miami Beach, FL | Winslow Windows & Doors

A garden window is a projecting box bay with glass on three sides and a shelf built into the base. It gives you a sunny, protected ledge for orchids, herbs, cookbooks, or glassware, and it does it without giving up wall space. In Miami Beach, where salt air and hurricane season punish ordinary windows, the version we install is anything but ordinary. Every pane is laminated impact glass, the frame is engineered for High-Velocity Hurricane Zone loading, and the whole unit carries Miami-Dade approval paperwork that your building department actually wants to see. Winslow Windows & Doors supplies and installs garden windows across Miami Beach from Flamingo Park to North Beach, and we handle the permitting details in between. Product Overview - Garden Windows

Most garden windows sold in Florida were never designed for Florida. They’re vinyl boxes with annealed glass, built for kitchens in Ohio, and they leak, fog, or shatter the first time a palmetto branch flies sideways in a tropical storm. The Garden Windows Impact Series is a different animal. This is a projecting box-style impact window with glass on three sides and a shelf base, purpose-built for coastal construction. The structural frame is extruded aluminum or reinforced vinyl, sized for the wind loads your specific building faces. The glass pack on all three exposed sides is laminated impact glass with a PVB interlayer, the same glazing technology used in our PGT, CGI, CWS, ES Windows, ECO, and Mr-Glass impact window lines.

The shelf is the part people fall in love with. It’s a real ledge, not a trim piece, and it holds weight without bowing because the sill integrates into the structural frame. Over a kitchen sink, it becomes a plant shelf and a dish rack. In a bathroom, it holds sea glass and candles. In a home office, it’s a ledge for a small speaker or a stack of books. The box extends outward from the wall plane and brings in light from the left, right, and front, changing how a small room feels. Miami Beach homes from the 1930s and 1940s often have deep walls and small openings. A garden window makes one of those openings feel twice as large without touching the rough opening.

Architecturally, the garden window fits Mediterranean-revival beach cottages, mid-century flat-roof boxes, and modern concrete block construction. We’ve installed them over kitchen sinks, in bathrooms, above garden counters, and in pantries where clients wanted a functional ledge and daylight. The finished unit looks intentional, not bolted on.

Technical Specifications

  • Frame materials: heavy-wall aluminum (standard) or reinforced vinyl. Aluminum carries the cleaner sightlines and works best for larger openings; vinyl suits smaller units and tighter budgets.
  • Glass options: laminated impact glass with PVB interlayer, Low-E insulated glass, tinted glass, clear glass. Laminated impact glass is standard on all three sides on the Impact Series.
  • Finish options: white, almond, bronze, black, tan. Bronze and tan hide coastal grime best on beachfront buildings.
  • Sill options: shelf sill, integral to the frame.
  • Design pressure: matched to your wind zone, up to +/-100 PSF, never higher. We do not sell a DP rating you don’t need.
  • Compliance: Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) and Florida Product Approval numbers available per configuration, engineered to FBC HVHZ requirements.
  • Sizing: built to your rough opening, so width and height are per project rather than from a catalog of fixed sizes.

Hurricane & Compliance Performance

Laminated Impact Glass - Every pane in the garden window carries a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer. Under impact, the glass may crack, but the interlayer holds the fragments in the frame, keeping wind, water, and debris outside where they belong. This is not a storm-shutter substitute. This is the rated glass itself doing the work.

Miami-Dade NOA / Florida Product Approval - The specific garden window configuration we quote you will carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance or a Florida Product Approval number, issued per configuration and verified on your written quote. Your Miami Beach building permit package references that number. It’s the piece of paper that keeps the job moving.

FBC HVHZ Compliance - The product is engineered to the Florida Building Code High-Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements. Miami Beach sits inside the HVHZ, so this is not optional marketing language. It’s the legal design baseline for any impact product installed here.

TAS 201 / TAS 202 / TAS 203 Testing Context - HVHZ-rated products are validated under a protocol family that includes TAS 201 for large-missile impact, TAS 202 for cyclic wind-pressure loading, and TAS 203 for forced-entry resistance. The garden window’s approval paperwork reflects testing under that family. That’s the testing that keeps a window intact while the building around it gets hammered.

Design Pressure Matched to Your Wind Zone - We size design pressure to the actual wind zone of your specific building, up to +/-100 PSF, and never higher. Over-specifying DP is wasted money. Under-specifying is a code failure. We pull the wind-zone data for your address and match the product to it.

Energy Performance Options - Low-E insulated glass is available on the garden window for heat rejection and reduced solar gain. On a west-facing Miami Beach kitchen wall, that’s not a luxury. Tinted glass is another option for glare control. The laminates stay in place either way.

Color & Glass Options

The finish you choose should survive salt spray and look right against your exterior. White stays classic on Mediterranean and art-deco stucco. Almond and tan read warm and blend with sandy coral rock walls. Bronze is the practical choice for beachfront buildings because it hides the salt haze that builds up between cleanings. Black gives a sharp, modern line on contemporary homes and looks especially good against light stucco. All finishes are available on aluminum; vinyl availability follows the supplier’s standard offering for the garden window profile.

On glass, clear laminated impact glass keeps the view honest and the light natural. Low-E insulated glass is the right choice when the window faces morning or afternoon sun and the room tends to overheat. Tinted glass cuts glare without the energy focus of Low-E, and it works well in bathrooms. Whatever combination you pick, every exposed pane is laminated impact glass. We don’t build garden windows with unprotected glass, because in Miami Beach that’s not a real product.

Installation by Winslow Windows & Doors in Miami Beach

We install garden windows the way they have to be installed in Miami Beach: level, plumb, and square, with the perimeter sealed properly and the fastening schedule followed to the letter. The process starts with a pre-install inspection of the rough opening, the wall condition, and the surrounding stucco or siding. We check for rot, termite damage, or previous water intrusion before the new window goes in. Then we set the unit level, plumb, and square in the opening, shim it according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and fasten it on the schedule the NOA configuration calls for. From there, we fill the perimeter with AAMA 812 low-expansion foam sealant, following AAMA 2400/2410 installation practice. That foam does two jobs: it insulates the cavity and it keeps air and water moving where they should, which is outside. Then we flash and seal the exterior, and run a final water test on the installation.

Improper installation compromises a Miami-Dade NOA-rated system. A mis-shimmed frame, a skipped fastener, or a dismissed sealant bead voids the weather-resistance of an otherwise compliant window. We’ve pulled out “brand new” garden windows in Miami Beach that leaked because the installer treated a projecting box like a flat window. A garden window catches wind from three directions and carries the weight of items on its shelf. The opening has to be right, the anchoring has to be right, and the perimeter has to be sealed exactly. On the permitting side, Miami Beach is an HVHZ jurisdiction, and product approvals get scrutinized. We handle the approval submittal as part of the installation. You get a garden window that clears inspection the first time.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"The old aluminium sliders howled every afternoon storm and swelter came straight through the glass. The new impact sliders shut with a sound like a bank vault and the back rooms finally hold their temperature."

PPercival Whitcombe
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."
