Therma-Tru Impact Garage Doors: The Miami Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible impact garage doors throughout Miami Beach, and a full replacement typically runs $4,200 to $8,900 installed depending on size, track hardware, and whether you need a new opener. Most Miami Beach homeowners discover they need us after a storm, when the door won’t seal, the panel skin has delaminated, or the tracks have pulled loose from the frame. Therma-Tru builds a solid door, but salt air, hurricane cycles, and ten years of coastal sun have a way of finding every weak point. When we show up, we match your existing track and opener setup to the right Therma-Tru spec so you’re not paying for parts you don’t need. We’re an independent installer, not a Therma-Tru corporate shop, which means we tell you the truth about what lasts and what doesn’t on a barrier island.

Quick Takeaways

  • Therma-Tru impact garage doors in Miami Beach range from $4,200 to $8,900 installed, including track alignment and spring replacement where needed.
  • We stock common Therma-Tru door sections, struts, and hardware on our trucks for same-week installs across Miami Beach.
  • Salt corrosion and wind-load fatigue are the two top killers of garage door hardware on Miami Beach, as has been the case for as long as Ed Winslow has worked on doors here.
  • One compatibility gotcha: Therma-Tru’s impact-rated doors require reinforced track anchors that many standard installers skip. We won’t. We install doors that won’t peel off the wall when a cat 3 blows through.
  • Winslow Windows & Doors is locally owned by Ed Winslow, state-licensed, and every tech who knocks on your door is background-checked and in uniform.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru’s impact garage door line splits into three families: the Classic-Craft steel series, the Fiber-Classic composite series, and the Smooth-Star impact-rated panels. Each one uses a different panel core and a different wind-load rating, and they are not interchangeable. You can’t bolt a Fiber-Classic section onto a Smooth-Star track and call it done. The panel thickness, hinge spacing, and strut profile are all different.

How to identify what you have: look for a metal ID tag on the interior face of the door, usually near the bottom section or the top edge of the first panel. The tag will list the series name, panel width, and a date code. If the tag is gone or painted over (common on Miami Beach doors that have been repainted three times since 2010), measure the panel thickness. Classic-Craft runs 1-3/8 inch thick, Fiber-Classic 1-1/2 inch, Smooth-Star 2 inch. That measurement alone tells us which parts bin to pull from.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, we’ll be direct with you. Therma-Tru’s hardware is good, but their hinges, rollers, and brackets are made for their system. A quality aftermarket roller from a brand like Clopay or Amarr will often outlast the OEM part in Miami Beach’s salt air because they use better-sealed bearings. But for the door sections themselves, we stick with genuine Therma-Tru panels. Mix-and-match sections void your wind-load rating, and your insurance company in Miami Beach will care about that.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Door Is Failing

  • The door shudders on the way up, then slams on the way down. This is almost always worn torsion springs or stretched cables. On a Miami Beach door, springs typically lose tension after 8 to 12 years, and the salt air speeds that up by corroding the coils from the outside in.
  • Panels are delaminating at the edges. That flaking, peeling look where the steel skin separates from the foam core is a classic Miami Beach failure. Once moisture gets in, the panel loses its rigidity and its impact rating begins to fail. This isn’t a DIY fix. The panel needs replacement.
  • The bottom seal leaves daylight showing. If you can see under the door along one side but not the other, the door has twisted or the tracks have shifted. On an impact-rated door, an uneven seal means water, sand, and wind-driven rain are getting in where they shouldn’t.
  • The door sounds like a bass drum when the wind gusts. Impact doors should feel solid in a storm, not flex. If the door is breathing in and out when a squall rolls through, the wind-load struts have pulled loose or the panel fasteners are failing.
  • Rust streaks running down from the hinges and track brackets. That’s not cosmetic. On Miami Beach, rust streaks mean the galvanized coating has failed and the underlying steel is thinning. Hinges and brackets can snap without warning when that happens.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Miami Beach, a Therma-Tru impact garage door replacement runs $4,200 to $8,900 installed. The range breaks down like this:

  • Single-car door (8×7 or 9×7): $4,200 to $5,600
  • Double-car door (16×7 or 18×7): $5,800 to $8,900
  • Track and hardware replacement: $400 to $900, often required on Miami Beach doors where the tracks have corroded
  • Spring replacement (if yours are older than 8 years, we typically recommend it): $280 to $460, factored into the quoted price

Every quote we give is a line-item price, fixed before we start. If it takes longer than we planned, that’s on us, not you. We do not write change orders that pad the bill after the job starts. The labor includes removing your old door, hauling it away, mounting the new door, aligning the tracks, setting the spring tension, and testing the full cycle twice. If it doesn’t run smooth, we don’t leave until it does. Our 36500-Day Done Right Promise applies to every garage door we hang in Miami Beach. Ed Winslow’s name is on every job we do. That keeps him honest.

DIY or Call Us?

Some garage door maintenance in Miami Beach is fine to handle yourself. You can clean the tracks with a rag and some silicone spray. You can check the weather seal for cracks. You can test the auto-reverse photo sensors with a 2×4. Those are all safe.

What you should not touch: the torsion springs. Those springs are under hundreds of pounds of tension, and when they let go, they can take fingers, eyes, or worse with them. This is not a case of “be careful.” This is a case of don’t do it. Call someone who does this every week. The same goes for replacing a full panel or realigning a twisted track on a heavy impact door. The door can weigh 300 pounds or more, and gravity doesn’t give second chances.

If you’re in Miami Beach and your Therma-Tru door is acting up, call us at (863) 656-0462. We’ll walk you through what you’re seeing and tell you honestly whether it’s a same-week fix or a full replacement. No charge for the phone call, no charge for the trip inside Miami-Dade.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"The old aluminium sliders howled every afternoon storm and swelter came straight through the glass. The new impact sliders shut with a sound like a bank vault and the back rooms finally hold their temperature."

PPercival Whitcombe
★★★★★

"He replaced the front door and the garage door in the same week, both rated for impact, and lined the frames up so straight my level had nothing to say. My wife stopped hearing the highway from the front room."

MMaximilian Vasquez
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."
